Chris Loughlin

Chris joined Augean in January 2022 and has extensive experience of the waste industry, regulated business environments and the management of major engineering and infrastructure businesses.

He started his career as a chartered engineer and after holding a number of senior positions with British Nuclear Fuels plc, joined its board as an Executive Director. He later went on to become Chief Operating Officer with Lloyds Register and Executive Chairman of Magnox Electric plc. Chris was also a senior diplomat in the British Embassy to Japan.

As CEO of the Pennon Group, Chris led the sale of Viridor. Chris is also an expert in the water industry. He was a Member of the Board and CEO of South West Water from 2006 and 2020 and was previously a board member and President of the Institute of Water and Chairman of Water UK. He is currently Chairman of British Water, Chairman of the Reall, a global charity providing affordable housing in the developing world, Senior Independent Director of Mears plc and an Industry Partner at Ancala.

John Rauch, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer

John joined Augean in December 2016 as Chief Operating Officer before becoming CEO in January 2021. He brings with him vast experience in driving strategic performance through operational and commercial excellence.

Having held a number of senior management roles, John was previously Chief Operations Officer at Bridon International Ltd where he oversaw the EMEA and APAC regions and before that, headed up the operational strategy for IMI Norgren in his role as Operations Director, as well as holding senior roles within global manufacturing group ESAB.

John’s passion is working with businesses to accelerate their capability through best practice in supply chain processes, driving agility, integrating operations, intelligent management systems, embracing efficiency and delighting customers.

Mark Fryer, Executive Director and Group Finance Director

Mark joined Augean in December 2016, bringing a significant breadth of financial expertise across a broad range of both listed and private companies, having been Group Finance Director of Dialight PLC from 2010 to 2014, an innovative LED technology company, and previously of Manganese Bronze Holdings PLC from 2002 to 2010, the company that built London taxis.

Prior to joining Augean, Mark had been Interim Chief Finance Officer of two private equity owned businesses, Bridon International Ltd, the global technology leader in the manufacture of wire and fibre rope, and Nualight Limited, a specialist LED technology company.

Before this, Mark held senior finance positions at GKN plc and Cable & Wireless plc after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with Ernst & Young in 1991. Whilst at GKN plc, Mark gained specialist waste experience, having been Finance Director for GKN Industrial Services division which included Cleanaway waste management.

He was appointed to the Board and became Group Finance Director on 14 December 2016.

David joined Augean in April 2009 following senior positions with Tradebe, Castle and Shanks where he managed a number of sales, commercial and technical teams.

David has worked in the hazardous waste industry for 30 years and has a multi-disciplined wealth of knowledge and experience with a focus on business systems and the development of technical and commercial processes to achieve a best in class service.

David has worked with many key clients with market-leading brands including GSK, Victrex and Boots to name a few whilst also advising government departments and sector institutions on the evolving commercial and technical landscape within the waste industry.

Gary Bower, Director of Corporate Stewardship

Gary’s role as Director of Corporate Stewardship encompasses responsibility for Health and Safety, Environmental Compliance and ensuring that Augean aligns to its Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) principles through our company values, policies and our integrated management systems and our interaction with the communities where we operate.

Gary has a degree in analytical chemistry and has over 30 years of industrial experience. He has been involved in waste management since 1998 when he joined the Environment Agency.

He enjoyed almost ten years of experience working for the Environment Agency as a technical advisor on hazardous waste. He worked with Defra Legal & Policy Department and Environment Agency policy on the drafting of the hazardous waste regulations and rolled out workshops with industry to identify how the regulatory provisions of the hazardous waste regulations would impact them and was co-author of the technical guidance on hazardous wastes WM2.

Gary was an Associate Director for Royal HaskoningDHV, where he gained 12 years’ experience as a consultant waste specialist before joining Augean in December 2020. He has considerable experience on environmental and technical due diligence studies to UK and International standards and compliance audits in the waste management sector. He has been commissioned as an expert witness providing expert reports and representation in court on waste regulatory issues and has coordinated a Development Consent Order application for an Energy from Waste project.

He is a Member of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management and is a Chartered Resources and Waste Manager. He chairs the Environment Agency’s Problematic Waste Stream group and sits on the waste regulatory steering committees of the ESA and EIC.

Richard Brooke - Commercial Director

Richard joined Augean in March 2018 and has over 30-years waste management experience having held senior commercial and business development positions in both corporate and small medium enterprises.

Richard has worked for Steetley and Redland (now Tarmac), Yorkshire Water’s solid waste subsidiary Global Environmental, Waste Recycling Group (now FCC) and as Commercial Director for both New Earth Solutions and Tamar Energy.

Richard has a proven track record in increasing shareholder value, leading high-performance driven teams and delivering improved levels of customer service.

Richard holds a Masters in Business Administration with Distinction, a First Class Bachelor of Science Honours Degree, and is a Fellow of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a Member of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management. Richard is a member of The Yorkshire Climate Action Coalition which is a business-led group, with a common desire to address the climate challenge.

Gene Wilson, Director

Gene holds a PhD from Imperial College, London, and was for 18 years the Director of Environmental Planning and Principal Ecological Consultant with MJ Carter Associates (MJCA), which provides independent advice on environmental issues to the public and private sectors.

Gene directed MJCA’s services in planning, environmental assessment, environmental audit, environmental management systems and waste management licensing and permitting, successfully managing these complex projects.

Dr Wilson is also an experienced expert witness and has given evidence on the subjects of minerals and waste management operations, planning policy and ecology. He is also a Chartered Town Planner, Environmental Scientist and Waste Manager.

As Director of Corporate Stewardship at Augean for 16 years, Gene was the health, safety and compliance champion of the Group and lead planning, permitting’ community and internal communications and regulatory affairs. He managed a team of experienced auditors and safety specialists ensuring that operations were carried out in accordance with the standards expected of the business.

As Director of Environmental Planning Gene works on specific projects using his specialist skills in obtaining operating consents including liaising with local stakeholders.

Angela McGhin - Company Secretary

Group General Counsel and Company Secretary

Angela joined Augean in September 2016 and is a qualified lawyer having previously trained and worked at the magic circle firm Clifford Chance LLP in London.

As General Counsel Angela is responsible for handling all of the Company’s legal matters including legal and regulatory compliance, control of the Company’s contracting position, dealing with any litigious issues and supporting all M&A/capital transactions and property work.

As Company Secretary, Angela is an officer of the Company and responsible for its effective administration, particularly with regard to ensuring compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements. Angela is adviser to the PLC Board on all matters of corporate governance and compliance.
